Where to avoid staying in New Orleans? ›

Treme Lafitte

The most dangerous neighborhood in New Orleans is Treme Lafitte. Often known as just Treme, the area is famous for its jazz clubs, delicious restaurants, and historic homes.

If you're looking to experience the city like a local, avoid Bourbon Street. Period. Instead, head out to some of our other wonderful neighborhoods, including the Garden District, Mid City, Treme, Bywater, Uptown and Lakeview, to name a few. Try to commit to visiting at least 1–2 neighborhoods while you're here.

New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, so music is in the city's DNA. However, the Big Easy is as famous for its incredible cuisine as it is for its vibrant live music scene. Frenchmen Street is where you can enjoy a combo of both!

As previously mentioned, the well-trodden tourist tracks of New Orleans are generally safe for visitors. Areas such as Uptown, the Garden District, and the very popular French Quarter, all have low crime rates and are close to the main attractions.

Also known as the CBD, the Central Business District is uptown from the French Quarter and a great central location for first time travelers who don't want to stay in the Quarter. Historically, the CBD grew alongside the Quarter and was the maritime commercial hub of the city along the Mississippi.

The French Quarter is often recommended as the best place to stay in New Orleans if you want to soak up the soul of the city.

The French Quarter & Bourbon Street: the best neighborhood in New Orleans for sightseeing. The French Quarter isn't just one of the best areas to stay in New Orleans, it's easily the most recognizable, too. Black wrought-iron fences and balconies contrast with vibrantly-painted homes, shops and pubs.

West End. As one of the safest neighborhoods in New Orleans, West End is a great place to raise a family. This safe, affordable New Orleans neighborhood offers a quiet lifestyle, plenty of green space, and waterfront recreation and views of Lake Pontchartrain and the 17th Street Canal.

To this day, tour guides tell you that Frenchmen Street is an off-the-beaten gem, a “local's Bourbon Street” where real New Orleanians gather to listen to live music and grab a drink.

Most of the music begins at 5:30 pm with additional music to follow. Most of the clubs on Frenchmen have sets beginning around 5 pm. Good sources to check are www.offbeat.com, www.wwoz.org, www.satchmo.com.

Amazing and colorful street art. I suggest to head this street early morning if you wanna take nice pictures before it's crowded. All bars and restaurants fully booked in the evening, we had no chance to experience the food or a show. I absolutely loved Frenchmen St.

Esplanade Avenue

This very green, picturesque avenue is lined with oak trees and classic antebellum mansions. It starts in City Park, leads through the French Quarter, and ends at the Mississippi River. The street's New Orleans charm definitely makes it one of the more instagrammable spots in Nola!

Old Aurora. Tucked within the historic Algiers neighborhood, affordable Old Aurora is one of the best places to live in New Orleans! Just across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter, this safe NOLA neighborhood has breathtaking views of the downtown skyline.

It's walkable if you are used to doing a lot of walking and the weather cooperates. Stay on St. Charles Avenue for the first several blocks and you will be reasonable safe. If you have concerns with weather or safety, just jump on the streetcar.

The French Quarter is one of the best areas to stay in New Orleans, but it's not the only choice. The Warehouse District, Downtown, Uptown — including the Garden District — and a couple of others are all great options offering a unique take on the NOLA experience.

side of the Quarter, and some parts near Esplanade are probably not safe any time. Everywhere else, the problems are more likely after dark. - the French Quarter crowd is said to still be pretty safe, although the petty crime rate is very real.
