  8. Post update

Right, let's have a recap of some of the best moments of a thrilling evening in Budapest.

  9. Going for a swim

Great scenes of celebration after Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi won the gold in the men's high jump final.

He joins 3,000m steeplechase winner Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco and bronze-medallist Abraham Kibiwot by jumping in and lying down in the water hazard of the steeplechase.

  10. 'I was pushing this race to the limit'

    Women's 1500m final

Faith Kipyegon was talking to BBC Sport after defending her 1500m title:

"I wanted to run my race and we are all strong in the final. The ladies were very strong and I was pushing this race to that limit. These days in the 1500m if you want to win, 3:55 and below."

  11. 'Masterclass of 1500m running'

    Women's 1500m final

    Jake Wightman

    2022 1500m World Champion

I think Kipyegon had so much respect from the other athletes in the race, it was almost like they were afraid to poke the bear to cause her to make a big move that was going to disrupt the race.

Kipyegon didn't leave the front after the first 100m. A masterclass of 1500m running.

  12. 'Another entertaining session'

Relive Kipyegon, Hassan and Muir in 1500m final on day four of World Championships (6)

    Harry Poole

    BBC Sport in Budapest

It wasn't to be for Laura Muir after what has been the most challenging season of her career, but what an end to day four we've had there.

Faith Kipyegon was a hugely popular winner - but there is no doubt who triggered the biggest celebration, certainly on one curve of the track.

Gianmarco Tamberi had the backing of his Italian supporters, whose enthusiasm quickly got many others in the stadium behind his gold medal tilt.

It's been another entertaining and well-attended evening session here in Budapest, and everyone's leaving with a smile on their faces once again.

  13. Gold medal - Gianmarco Tamberi (Italy)

    Men's high jump final

Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi had a joint gold medal with Mutaz Essa Barshim at the Tokyo Olympics, but there will be no-one sharing the top step of the podium with the Italian this time around.

Essa Barshim of Qatar failed at the height of 2.36m, leaving him third and with Tamberi and American JuVaughn Harrison battling it out for the gold.

Both cleared 2.36m, but could go no higher so Tamberi took the gold as he cleared 2.36m at the first attempt, while Harrison needed a couple of goes.

  14. Gold medal - Laulaga Tausaga (USA)

    Women's discus final

Talk about rising to the occasion.

American Laulaga Tausaga was down in sixth at the halfway point of the competition with an effort of 65.56m, already a personal best.

But then, incredibly, she goes so far better with an effort of 69.49m, which eventually gives her the gold medal.

Fellow American Valarie Allman takes silver with 68.61m, with China's Feng Bin the bronze with a throw of 68.20m.

  15. Channel Change

Relive Kipyegon, Hassan and Muir in 1500m final on day four of World Championships (8)

    BBC Three

All change again - live coverage continues on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three

  16. Gold medal - Soufiane El Bakkali

    Men's 3,000m steeplechase final

Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali and Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma, as many expected, were the two men pushing for gold in the men's 3,000m steeplechase and they are close together coming round the bend on the last lap.

But El Bakkali shows why he is the reigning Olympic and World champion as he pulls clear to make it successive world titles, with Girma second.

Third is an incredible performance from Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot, who fell over when jumping over the barrier, only to pick himself up and hold off a challenge from compatriot Leonard Kipkemoi Bett.

  17. 'It's another one of those crazy finals' - Muir

    Women's 1500m final

The British trio of Katie Snowden, Melissa Courtney-Bryant and Laira Muir were talking to BBC Sport:

    Katie Snowden

"It wasn’t as quick as I thought it was going to be, but thesemis took a lot out of me, and I felt heavy-legged. Personal best in the last round, andeighth in the world, I don’t think I can complain that much."

    Melissa Courtney-Bryant

"I have to be happy that I was in a world championship finaland the strength in British distance running and in that final was reallyincredible.

"That was a really below par from me and I feel really disappointed.I just felt rubbish today. I had a good warm-up but as soon as the gun went offthere was nothing there.

"It’s really hard because of the stadium, the atmosphere, family, everyone’s here and you want to perform here."

    Laura Muir

"I thought I positioned myself for the race, I was coveringmoves but that last lap was crazy. It’s another one of those crazy finals but Ifeel like I won even before I came into this race because I’m happy and I can’tthank the number of people who’ve supported me, it’s been amazing.

"These twohave done great and I am so proud of them. I gave it everything I could today."

  18. Post update

    Men's high jump

There will be no gold medal for Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar as he fails at 2.36m, which will leave him in third.

It's between Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi and American JuVaughn Harrison for the gold.

  19. The last race of the day

Current Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali has achieved everything but the world record; Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma has held that world record since early June but is yet to win a major title.

Girma has had to settle for silver at the past three global championships and has lost his last five steeplechase races against El Bakkali. Girma did win their most recent head-to-head though, over 3,000m in May. His compatriot Getnet Wale and Kenyans Abraham Kibiwot and Simon Koech could challenge.
