Hines Ward | Pittsburgh Steelers (2024)

Hines Ward epitomized what being a Steelers player is all about. He played with heart and emotion, with intelligence and fierceness, and with a love for the game that showed through the ever-present smile on his face.

Ward played 14 seasons for the Steelers after being selected in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft, the 92nd player overall. He played on two Super Bowl teams and was the MVP of Super Bowl XL, helping lead the Steelers to a 21-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks, which included a 43-yard touchdown reception from Antwan Randle El.

Ward shattered the Steelers all-time reception record during his time, finishing his career with 1,000 receptions, which ranks first in the storied history of a team that already has two Hall of Fame receivers in John Stallworth and Lynn Swann. His 12,083 career receiving yards also ranks first in franchise history, as do his 85 receiving touchdowns.

His versatility was always on display with his blocking ability a shining example of that. Ward, a member of the Steelers Hall of Honor, never shied away from laying a hit on a defender to help his teammates gain extra yards, oftentimes getting under the skin of opponents not always expecting the hit, or the smile on his face after he delivered the hit.h
