If you haven't heard of Door County, you're not alone. On a map, it's the finger of land extending from the city of Green Bay into Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay to the west.

Door County tourism, in its simplest form, began in 1855 when Asa Thorp, a lumberer and barrelmaker by trade, set the foundations of current-day Fish Creek: a humble dock on the waters of Lake Michigan from which he sold lumber and fuel to ships passing by the harbor.

Fish creek is definitely amongst the best towns in Door Country. Even the nature itself behaves civil here. It houses the biggest golf course in all of Wisconsin. The great deal of water provides for amazing kayaking experience.

It was part of the Gibraltar Township until 1861. Lumber was the main business of Baileys Harbor until the forests were depleted and replaced by shipping.

Door County offers more miles of shoreline, one of the highest concentrations of lighthouses and more state parks – a total of five – than any other county in the state.

Fish Creek is known as the shopping center of Door County, with a plethora of boutiques, art galleries, retail stores, clothing stores, and gift shops to visit. One of the most prominent and well-known is Hide Side Corner Store.

The curvy road is part of the the Door County Coastal Byway, which is one of three National Scenic Byways in Wisconsin. The other two are the Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway near the Apostle Islands and Wisconsin's Great River Road.

Death's Door is the chief navigational passage between the Bay of Green Bay and Lake Michigan. It lies between the northeast end of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula and the rocky shores of Pilot, Plum, Detroit, and Washington islands. The precise origins of the passage's name remain shrouded in legend.
