How many plants are native to Missouri? ›

Missouri has 2,000 plus native plants. Many can be used for specific landscaping purposes. The Missouri Prairie Foundation's growth initiative Grow Native!

The Grow Native! program recognizes that some or perhaps many “nativars” (a cultivar or genetic variant of a straight native species) may have as high an ecological value as native species, but in many cases this is conjecture, and is not absolute.

The concerns are two-fold: loss of genetic diversity and reduced ecosystem services that plants normally provide. Since cultivars are clones, using them exclusively reduces the genetic diversity of the species, diminishing the biological heritage of the species and opening the potential for biological decline of it.

Native plants evolved with Missouri's geology, climate, and wildlife. Many wildlife species prefer native plants for habitat and depend on them for survival. Well-established and maintained native-plant communities help resist invasive non-natives that threaten wildlife habitat and crops.

In December, plant native grass and forb seed. Decide whether you're going to plant or seed. Small projects are best established with plants or plugs, and larger installations are best done by seeding— either by broadcasting or drilling. If you plant in December, freezing and thawing will work the seed into the ground.

The flag, seal, flower (white hawthorn blossom), bird (eastern bluebird), and tree (flowering dogwood) are some of the major state symbols of Missouri.

Attract Pests – While the idea of a native garden is to provide refuge to local wildlife, it can also provide refuge to pests such as voles, mice, rats and even bats. One might argue they are necessary to the ecosystem, but your neighbors may not appreciate bats in the attic or voles in her garden.

Why are native plants in decline? ›

Overgrazing, residential and commercial development, mining, and other human activities have adversely impacted many native plant communities through habitat degradation or loss . Natural disasters affect plant habitats, too.

Most cultivars, however, are the result of selective breeding by humans. Hybrids are the result of a genetic cross between two different species. A plant label will give the genera and species in italics, followed by another descriptive name in single quotes. This last name indicates that the plant is a cultivar.

Noteworthy Characteristics. Hosta is a genus of about 70 species of shade-loving, rhizomatous, clump-forming, herbaceous perennials which are native to open woodlands, woodland margins and glades in Japan, Korea, China and eastern Russia.

Native to Missouri, the Eastern Red Cedar is a popular choice for privacy screens. It features dense foliage that provides year-round coverage and thrives in a variety of soil types. This evergreen tree is also drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, making it ideal for busy homeowners.

Ruudbeckia hirta, commonly called black-eyed Susan, is a common Missouri native wildflower which typically occurs in open woods, prairies, fields, roadsides and waste areas throughout the State.
